Employee Benefits 101

As organizations work to attract and retain talent during times of great changes in the U.S. economy, the benefits plan offered as a part of a total compensation package becomes even more important. A sound benefits plan can be a differentiator in the competition for talent. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased employees’ interest in specific features of company benefit plans and the employee costs. From the employer’s perspective, making sound decisions about benefit packages is critically important to the bottom line. Some ancillary benefit offerings are valued by employees and can be provided with little or no investment from the employer. 

This workshop provides information about benefit plans--what is valued by employees; what adds value for employers; as well as what funding model options make financial sense to the employer. Information will be useful to HR professionals as they make informed decisions on behalf of their companies’ and as they evaluate benefit plans for their families and for themselves.  


• Recognize the value proposition of employee benefits to employers and to employees.
• Review features and the relative importance of commonly offered benefits (medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, and ancillary).
• Examine funding options of commonly offered employee benefits.
• Identify other things to consider in company administration of plans and in employees’ access and use.

Scott M. Settle
Senior Vice President, Employee Benefits Practice Manager, USI Insurance Services LLC

Scott has been in the insurance industry for over 20 years and has extensive experience in employee benefits and health cost management.

Scott joined USI in 2012 and is responsible for the Michigan/Toledo Employee Benefits Practice group.  Scott came to USI from HealthSmart, a National Third-Party Administrator where he was National Director of Sales based out of Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to that, Scott ran sales and account service for Cofinity, a division of Aetna, in Southfield, Michigan.

In these past experiences, Scott has worked at the Executive level in the management and execution of sales strategies and client service operations. He also has several years of experience in direct selling of claims administration, cost management, and alternative health care funding programs to brokers and large employers.

Scott, wife Renea, and their children Blake (12) and Brielle (8) reside in Northville.

Scott received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Economics from Michigan State University and a Masters of Labor Relations and Human Resource Management also from Michigan State University.

Vaughn Hurst
Employee Benefits Consultant, USI Insurance Services LLC

Vaughn Hurst is a Consultant for Employee Benefits with USI’s Troy office.  His responsibilities include prospecting of clients, establishing strategic plans for clients’ employee benefits and retention of his clients.  Vaughn started with USI in May of 2020 and he has over 20 years of experience in a myriad of roles in the health care industry. 

Prior to USI, Vaugh worked for Advantasure as a Manager of Account Management servicing Risk and Quality Services that were sold to various Medicare and ACA Blue Cross plans nationally.  Prior to that position, he was the Medicare Broker Channel Manager for Molina Healthcare for Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  His previous group sales experience started with Humana Health Plans in Michigan where he was an Account Executive for Large Group.  He managed a variety of large group commercial accounts that included self-fund medical, fully insured medical, dental vision, workplace voluntary, and Group Medicare.  Vaughn earned his Six Sigma Black Belt certification from Ford Motor Company in their health care department.  In addition to the payor and purchasing side of health care, he worked at two community hospitals in various leadership roles.  He has a very well-rounded professional experience in the health care industry and has a firm understanding of how its stakeholders interact.

Vaughn earned a BA in Economics and a Masters of Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. 

His community service involves serving in a leadership and ministry positions with his church, New Way Christian Center.  He is also active with various professional organizations and with an alumni chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. 

Vaughn is lifelong resident of Michigan who is married with two children.  He also has two adult children.  Vaughn enjoys running, beaches, and watching Michigan football.
