Professional Member

A professional member is someone who works in the Human Resources field in their daily professional work for a company. Is self-employed as a consultant in the HR field or is adjacent to the HR field, e.g. – employment attorney, benefits broker, teacher of HR curriculum. Additionally, someone who is retired from the HR profession.

New Pricing Includes Your SHRM Detroit and SHRM National Memberships:

Chapter membership is not transferable from one individual to another. Membership in other SHRM affiliated chapters is not transferable to SHRM Detroit. Chapter membership is contingent on the timely payment of annual dues.  Dual membership in SHRM-National is Required.

SHRM's Dual Membership Release (DMR)

Why We're Making This Change

SHRM has announced that Dual Membership will become the required membership model for SHRM-affiliated chapters in the future. Rather than waiting until the requirement takes effect, our Board has chosen to transition now so we can provide a thoughtful, well-planned experience for our members.

We believe this is the right move because it:

  • Simplifies your membership experience with one renewal, one profile, and one annual transaction through SHRM's membership system. Going forward, chapter dues will no longer be paid separately to SHRM Detroit—they will be included as part of your SHRM membership renewal, directly on the national SHRM website.

  • Strengthens the value of membership by seamlessly connecting your local Detroit community with SHRM's national resources, tools, research, and professional development opportunities.

  • Allows our volunteer Board to focus more on serving members by spending less time on membership administration and more time delivering meaningful programming, networking, and career development.

  • Positions SHRM Detroit for the future by aligning with SHRM's evolving chapter model while continuing to provide the local connections and experiences that make our chapter unique.

This transition reflects our commitment to making membership easier, more valuable, and more sustainable for years to come.

If you are currently both a SHRM Detroit member and a SHRM member

To make this program work, your chapter membership renewal date will be aligned with your existing SHRM membership renewal date. In the weeks following the effective date, this will be updated on our StarChapter website. Going forward, your SHRM renewal date will become your single renewal date for both SHRM and SHRM Detroit memberships.

To make this process as seamless as possible, SHRM Detroit is offering a Chapter Dues Holiday during the alignment period, eligible to those where their chapter membership is expiring before their next national renewal. This will allow eligible annual SHRM members to transition to Dual Membership without paying separate chapter dues during this one-time conversion.

Anyone whose SHRM membership expires before their local chapter membership will need to pay their next year of chapter dues when you renew your SHRM membership, resulting in a few months of overlap in their payments. We will provide you with a chapter dues discount code, in the amount of 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% reduction in your local  dues owed at checkout.

If you currently renew your SHRM membership annually, your transition will occur automatically as part of your next SHRM renewal.

If you are currently on a two- or three-year SHRM membership, we'll reach out to you separately with a chapter dues invoice to maintain your chapter membership until your next SHRM renewal. Once your multi-year SHRM membership renews, you'll transition to Dual Membership, and all future renewals will be completed in a single transaction.

If you are currently a Chapter Member Only (not a SHRM member)

Our Local Members Only (LMO) members will transition to Dual Membership over the next 12 months.

To help with this transition, Local Members Only are eligible for a special 50% discounted introductory SHRM Professional Membership beginning with our DMR launch. This transition pricing is available for the first year of SHRM membership, and discount codes will be available beginning on launch day.

When your current chapter membership expires, your only renewal option will be Dual Membership, which includes both SHRM and SHRM Detroit membership. Over the transition period, all chapter members will become Dual Members, and the Chapter Member Only membership option will be retired.
